Mount Pilatus was on my Switzerland itinerary as a day trip from our Jungfrau base — and then we swapped it for somewhere else on the day (it happens). But I’d researched it thoroughly, and if you’re based in Interlaken with a spare day, going up Mount Pilatus from Interlaken is a genuinely spectacular outing. Here’s the honest lowdown — including how long it really takes and which pass actually covers it.

How to get to Mount Pilatus from Interlaken

Here’s the thing most people don’t realise: Pilatus sits above Lucerne, not in the Bernese Oberland. So from Interlaken you first take the train to Lucerne — about 2 hours on the scenic Luzern–Interlaken Express — and start the Golden Round Trip from there. Budget a full day: roughly 2 hours to Lucerne, 4–6 hours for Pilatus, and 2 hours back.

The Golden Round Trip, explained

The classic way to do Pilatus is the Golden Round Trip — a loop that uses just about every form of Swiss transport. You take a boat across Lake Lucerne to Alpnachstad, ride the world’s steepest cogwheel railway up to Pilatus Kulm (2,132 m), then come down by a panoramic cable car (the “Dragon Ride”) and a gondola to Kriens, and finish with a bus back to Lucerne. Up top you’ll find viewing platforms, easy ridge walks and restaurants. It runs about CHF 119.50 per adult in 2026.

Which pass covers Mount Pilatus?

This is the bit that catches people out. The Berner Oberland Pass does not cover Pilatus — it’s outside the Bernese Oberland region. The pass will cover your train to Lucerne, but the Pilatus mountain trip itself is a separate, paid excursion. A Swiss Travel Pass is the better fit here: the boat and bus are free, and you get 50% off the cogwheel railway and cable cars. A Half Fare Card also halves the mountain legs. I compare all the options in my Swiss Travel Pass guide.

⭐ Is the day trip actually worth it from Interlaken?

Honest take: Pilatus is stunning and the Golden Round Trip is a bucket-list ride — but from Interlaken it’s a long day, with four-plus hours of travel before you even start the mountain. It’s most worth it if you want to combine Lucerne and Pilatus in one day, you have a genuinely spare day in your itinerary, or you’re moving between regions and Lucerne is on your route anyway. If you’re tight on time in the Jungfrau, honestly, your in-region peaks — Grindelwald First, the Schynige Platte panorama trail — give you jaw-dropping views with a fraction of the travel.

When to go & quick tips

  • The full Golden Round Trip runs roughly mid-May to mid-October (the cogwheel railway is seasonal).
  • Go early to beat the crowds and the afternoon cloud — there are no views if the summit is socked in, so check the mountain webcam/forecast first.
  • In winter you can still reach the summit via the cable car and gondola side, even when the cogwheel railway is closed.
